Austin, Texas – Thunderstorms are moving across Central Texas Tuesday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, lightning, and the risk of flooding to Austin, San Antonio, and the Hill Country. Roads could quickly become slick as downpours intensify during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio, rain that pushed in from the Houston area this morning is now expanding west, with stronger cells developing across Travis, Bexar, Comal, and Hays counties. Some storms could deliver rainfall rates exceeding an inch per hour along with frequent lightning.

Communities from Round Rock to New Braunfels are already seeing steady rainfall, while San Marcos and San Antonio could experience heavier downpours through late afternoon. In the Hill Country, from Fredericksburg to Kerrville, drivers should expect reduced visibility on U.S. 281 and I-10.

Residents are urged to avoid low-water crossings, charge electronic devices in case of power outages, and check road conditions before heading out. Central Texas is particularly vulnerable to flash flooding when storms stall, similar to past September flood events in the region.

Storms are expected to linger into tonight, with additional showers possible Wednesday morning. More advisories may be issued if rainfall intensifies.
