HOUSTON, Texas – Residents in Houston and across Southeast Texas will face poor air quality Monday as high heat combines with stagnant conditions, prompting an Ozone Action Day for Harris, Galveston, and Brazoria counties. Afternoon highs are expected to reach 96 degrees, with the heat index climbing near 104, adding to health concerns for sensitive groups.

According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, elevated ozone levels are likely during peak afternoon hours. Officials urge residents to reduce emissions by carpooling, avoiding idling in drive-through lanes, and limiting outdoor activity, especially for children, seniors, and those with respiratory issues.

The National Weather Service reports a 40% chance of thunderstorms Monday, mainly after 4 p.m., which could provide some temporary relief from high ozone concentrations. However, unsettled weather lingers through the week, with rain chances increasing to 60% Tuesday and continuing off and on into Thursday.

Drivers should anticipate reduced visibility during downpours and possible street flooding in low-lying areas. Residents are encouraged to keep vehicles fueled, limit energy use during peak hours, and remain indoors when possible during the hottest part of the day.

Air quality alerts remain in place through Monday evening, with additional advisories possible if stagnant, hot conditions persist.
