Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers and outdoor workers in central Iowa will battle dangerous heat Saturday as temperatures climb to 95°F with heat index values reaching as high as 107°F. A Heat Advisory remains in effect for Des Moines and surrounding counties through 6 p.m. Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, south-southwest winds gusting up to 18 mph will combine with high humidity to make conditions hazardous. The agency urges residents to avoid strenuous activity, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.

Saturday night will bring some relief with lows near 75°F, but Sunday brings another round of heat with highs again pushing 95°F and a heat index near 104°F. By Sunday night, a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms develops, with storms more likely late Monday into Monday night when rain chances rise to 40 percent.
