Grand Forks, N.D. – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing golf ball-sized hail are expected to develop late tonight across southeast North Dakota and move into west-central Minnesota through early Saturday morning. The National Weather Service warns the greatest threat will occur between midnight and 8 a.m., with hail posing the most significant hazard. Gusty winds up to 60 mph are also possible.
According to the NWS Grand Forks office, storms will be isolated but could be intense where they do form. Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive alerts overnight, especially since many will be asleep when warnings could be issued.
Cities at higher risk include Fargo, Wahpeton, Valley City, and Detroit Lakes, where hail could damage vehicles, roofs, and crops. Strong winds may also bring down branches and cause sporadic power outages. Motorists should avoid travel during the peak storm window if possible, and those with outdoor plans or events should move indoors before midnight.
The severe risk will diminish by mid-morning Saturday as storms move east, but more unsettled weather could return later in the weekend.
