Amarillo, Texas – Residents across the Texas Panhandle will face another day of sweltering heat Friday, with highs ranging from the upper 90s to the low 100s. In Palo Duro Canyon, temperatures are expected to peak between 100 and 102 degrees, making hydration and limited outdoor exposure critical to avoid heat illness.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a slow cooling trend will take shape after Friday’s heat, bringing highs down into the upper 80s and low 90s over the weekend and into early next week. Overnight lows will gradually become more comfortable, dipping into the 60s by midweek.
The extreme heat Friday will affect travel and outdoor activities, particularly in rural areas where shade and water may be scarce. Those visiting recreation areas like Palo Duro Canyon should bring extra water, wear light-colored clothing, and take breaks in cooler, shaded spots.
Cooling will be most noticeable by Tuesday, when many Panhandle cities could see highs in the upper 80s. Heat advisories could be extended if temperatures remain higher than forecast.
