Boston, MA – Heavy downpours could bring localized flash flooding to parts of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and eastern Connecticut Thursday afternoon, with the greatest risk between 2 and 9 p.m. Urban streets, low-lying areas, and poor drainage spots are most vulnerable.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a Level 1 (marginal) excessive rainfall risk is in place, meaning there is at least a 5% chance of flash flooding. Scattered thunderstorms will be capable of producing short bursts of torrential rain, potentially overwhelming storm drains in cities like Providence, Worcester, and Boston.

Motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded intersections and underpasses, where water depth can rise quickly and cause vehicles to stall. The afternoon commute could be impacted, especially along I-95, Route 1, and other busy corridors. Residents should monitor local alerts, move valuables from basements, and keep devices charged in case of power outages.

Conditions are expected to improve by late evening as storms move offshore. Drier, cooler weather will settle in Friday, bringing a break from the unsettled pattern.
