Winner, S.D. – South-central South Dakota will swelter under dangerous heat this afternoon as a heat advisory takes effect from 2 to 8 p.m. CDT, with heat index values expected to climb to 101 degrees. The combination of hot air and high humidity will pose a health risk for residents spending time outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, the advisory covers Mellette and Tripp counties, including Winner, White River, Ideal, Witten, Colome, and surrounding communities. Officials urge residents to limit strenuous activity during the hottest hours and seek shade or air-conditioned spaces.

Local emergency managers recommend drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol and caffeinated beverages, and checking on elderly neighbors or anyone without reliable cooling. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, where interior temperatures can spike dangerously in minutes.

The heat is expected to ease after sunset, but forecasters warn that additional advisories could be issued if hot and humid conditions persist into the weekend.
