La Porte, IN – Motorists across parts of northern Indiana and southwest Michigan are being advised to slow down and use caution early Thursday as patchy dense fog settles over the area.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the fog developed overnight as clear skies and cooling temperatures into the upper 50s and lower 60s allowed moisture near the surface to condense. The advisory, issued at 3:16 a.m. EDT, covers Starke, La Porte, and western St. Joseph counties in Indiana, along with Berrien County in Michigan.

Weather officials said visibility will vary considerably due to the patchy nature of the fog, with some locations experiencing clear conditions while others may see visibility drop to one-quarter mile or less in a matter of seconds. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra space between vehicles to reduce the risk of collisions.

The fog is expected to lift later this morning as temperatures rise and sunlight breaks through. Until then, commuters, school buses, and early-morning travelers are reminded to prepare for sudden changes in road visibility, especially on rural highways and near bodies of water where fog can be thicker.

Officials say conditions like these can be particularly hazardous during the morning rush, as drivers may not anticipate the sudden drop in visibility. Those traveling on U.S. 20, U.S. 35, and Interstate 94 in the affected counties should be extra alert.

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation, but no extended advisories are anticipated once the fog dissipates later this morning.
