Springfield, Ill. – Central Illinois will see a sharp rise in heat and humidity this weekend, with dangerous conditions expected from Saturday through Monday. Afternoon heat indices could climb as high as 110°, posing a significant risk for heat-related illness.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Friday will mark the start of the warm-up, with highs near 91° and heat indices in the upper 90s. The most oppressive stretch arrives over the weekend, with highs in the mid-90s and afternoon heat indices ranging from 100° to 110°. Overnight lows will offer little relief, staying in the mid-70s.

Residents in cities including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, and Decatur are urged to limit strenuous outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling centers may be available in larger communities, and outdoor events could be impacted by the extreme conditions.

The heat wave is expected to persist through Monday before a potential break midweek, though forecasters caution that additional heat advisories could be issued if temperatures remain high.
