Paxton, IL – Traffic is down to one lane on I-57 northbound at milepost 257, just south of Paxton, after a section of roadway buckled this afternoon.
According to the Illinois State Police, the right lane at the location has been shut down while Illinois Department of Transportation crews work to repair the damage. The lane closure is expected to remain in place for approximately two hours.
Motorists traveling through the area should expect delays and are urged to use caution. Drivers may want to consider alternate routes while the repair work is underway, particularly during peak travel periods. The cause of the roadway buckle was not immediately provided, though such incidents are often linked to extreme weather conditions or underlying pavement issues.
Authorities emphasize that northbound traffic will remain open in the left lane only until repairs are complete. Road signs and personnel are directing vehicles safely through the area. Travelers should watch for workers and slow-moving equipment along the shoulder.
Local drivers reported moderate congestion building in the affected stretch as crews began repairs, but traffic was moving steadily in the open lane. Officials anticipate that once the roadway is leveled and resurfaced, both lanes will reopen later today.
