Kearney, Neb. – Drivers across central Nebraska are waking up to thick fog Tuesday morning, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for Sherman, Valley, Buffalo, Dawson, Franklin, Furnas, Gosper, Harlan, Kearney, and Phelps counties until 10 a.m. CDT.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the fog is expected to gradually lift by midmorning, but until then, motorists should plan for slower travel and limited visibility on highways including I-80, U.S. 34, and U.S. 283. The reduced sight distance can make sudden stops more dangerous, particularly on rural stretches where wildlife crossings are common.

Local emergency managers urge drivers to keep headlights on low beam, maintain extra following distance, and avoid passing in low-visibility zones. For those walking or biking early this morning, reflective gear is recommended to ensure visibility to motorists.

Conditions are expected to improve late this morning as winds increase slightly, helping to disperse the fog. Another update will be issued if visibility does not improve by the expected time.
