Chicago, IL – Strong afternoon and evening thunderstorms are set to target communities southeast of I-55 today, with torrential rain and damaging winds posing the biggest threats. Residents in areas such as Joliet, Kankakee, Pontiac, and Watseka could see rapid downpours capable of triggering flash flooding on roads and in low-lying spots.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, the most intense storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, strong enough to down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages. Lightning strikes will be possible in all storms, and the heaviest rainfall could quickly overwhelm storm drains, leading to localized street flooding.

Drivers are urged to use caution, especially during peak evening travel hours, as sudden ponding on roadways may occur. If flooding is encountered, turn around rather than attempting to cross. Outdoor activities should be rescheduled, and loose outdoor items should be secured ahead of gusty winds.

Storm activity should taper off overnight, with drier and less humid weather arriving Wednesday and Thursday. However, heat and humidity are expected to return by Friday and Saturday.
