Charleston, W.Va. – Hot, humid air is fueling scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms across much of West Virginia today, with the potential for heavier and more widespread rainfall developing by Wednesday. While the risk for severe storms remains low, residents should prepare for periods of heavy downpours.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, storms will increase in coverage Wednesday, bringing widespread rain to both lowland cities such as Huntington, Charleston, and Parkersburg, and cooler, wetter conditions to mountain towns like Elkins and Snowshoe. Heavy rain may lead to localized flooding, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas that see multiple rounds of showers.

Travelers on Interstates 64, 77, and 79 should be alert for reduced visibility and water ponding during peak storm activity. The combination of wet roads and afternoon rush-hour traffic could increase the risk of accidents. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, avoid driving through flooded roads, and check local alerts before heading out.

Storm activity will taper to more scattered coverage Thursday, but pockets of heavy rain could linger. Additional advisories remain possible if flooding concerns grow.
