Marquette, Mich. – Showers and thunderstorms will continue sweeping across Upper Michigan this afternoon, bringing the risk of strong winds, lightning, and heavy downpours. The storms are expected to exit the region late this evening, but not before potentially causing localized flooding and power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, the most intense storms this afternoon could deliver damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning strikes, especially in areas from Ironwood to Sault Ste. Marie. Radar at 3:06 p.m. EDT showed a broad line of storms stretching from northern Wisconsin into the central and eastern U.P., with heavier bands moving northeast toward Lake Superior.

Drivers along U.S. Highway 2 and M-28 should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, including reduced visibility and water pooling on roadways. Outdoor events in Marquette, Escanaba, and Houghton may face delays or cancellations due to lightning risk. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and avoid travel during the most intense periods of rain.

The storm threat will taper off from west to east by late tonight, giving way to calmer conditions by Sunday morning. Additional weather statements are possible if storms intensify.
