Medford, Ore. – Southern Oregon is bracing for dangerous heat through early next week, with triple-digit temperatures expected across many inland communities and elevated coastal heat due to the Chetco Effect. The National Weather Service warns the highest danger will occur between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when heat-related illnesses are most likely.
According to the Weather Service office in Medford, temperatures in Cave Junction, Grants Pass, and Medford will soar above 100°F Sunday through Tuesday, peaking Monday. Brookings could see 90s Friday and Saturday, unusual for the coast, while Roseburg and Yreka are also forecast to hit the century mark.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activity during midday hours, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, and stay hydrated. Public cooling centers are open, as fans and open windows may not provide enough relief for those without air conditioning.
The heat risk is considered high enough to affect anyone without adequate cooling or hydration, not just vulnerable groups. Conditions should begin to ease by Wednesday, but alerts remain in effect until then.
