Eastern North Dakota Severe Storm Risk: Thunderstorms, Hail, and 70 MPH Gusts Until Weekend

Grand Forks, ND – Severe weather continues to threaten eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, with damaging winds and large hail expected through Friday. Valley City, Lisbon, and surrounding areas could see quarter-sized hail and wind gusts near 70 mph starting Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Level 2 out of 5 severe storm risk remains in effect for today, primarily impacting Valley City and Lisbon. The remainder of eastern North Dakota and parts of west central Minnesota remain under a Level 1 risk. Thunderstorms are forecast to intensify Wednesday night into Friday, with large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes possible.

Wednesday: Isolated strong storms developing in the afternoon and evening, especially near Valley City and Lisbon.

Thursday: Chance of thunderstorms continues late Thursday night into early Friday, with localized flooding possible in low-lying areas.

Friday: Highest potential for severe weather; damaging winds, hail up to 1 inch, and possible tornado development. Showers linger through Friday night.

Saturday–Sunday: Drying out with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low 80s by Saturday afternoon.

Residents should prepare for rapid weather changes, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during storm periods. Additional warnings may be issued if storm development strengthens.
