Lexington, Kentucky – Torrential rain swept across Lexington early Tuesday afternoon, putting roads, neighborhoods, and low-lying areas at immediate risk as a Flash Flood Warning takes hold through 4:15 p.m. According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, radar showed thunderstorms dumping between 1 and 2 inches of rain across central Fayette County, with another inch possible before storms move out. Flash flooding is now underway, with the most dangerous conditions near creeks, streams, and underpasses in areas including Northland, Thoroughbred Acres, Chevy Chase, and the U K Arboretum.

Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid all flooded streets and never attempt to cross barricaded or water-covered roadways. The majority of flood fatalities occur in vehicles—turn around, don’t drown. Residents near Bryan Station, Meadowthorpe, Cadentown, and Cardinal Hill should be prepared for fast-changing water levels and report flooding only when safe.

Heavy rain will persist into the afternoon, raising the risk of road closures and utility outages, especially in poorly drained parts of the city. Authorities warn that additional alerts may follow if storms stall or intensify. The Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until at least 4:15 p.m. Tuesday; stay tuned to local updates and be ready to act if conditions worsen.
