Marquette, MI – Residents across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula should brace for another round of smoky skies and hazy conditions through Monday as wildfire smoke drifts back into the region, prompting renewed air quality alerts.

According to the National Weather Service, widespread haze will settle over Marquette and surrounding areas starting late Sunday night, with visibility dropping to six miles or less by Monday morning. Calm winds are expected to persist through early Monday before shifting northeast around 5 mph, keeping the smoke trapped near the surface.

Though temperatures will remain comfortable—with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s—those with respiratory issues are urged to limit outdoor activity, especially in the early part of the week. Areas near Sawyer International Airport reported visible smoke as early as Sunday morning, signaling early onset of deteriorating air quality.

Drivers should be cautious during morning commutes Monday and Tuesday as reduced visibility may affect rural roads and highways across Marquette County and the western U.P.

The smoky conditions are expected to gradually clear by Tuesday evening, but another round of scattered thunderstorms could develop Thursday, potentially improving air quality. Additional air quality advisories may be issued if smoke concentrations persist.
