Eastport, Maryland – A waterspout spun ashore in Eastport Thursday afternoon, briefly turning into a tornado that damaged several small boats before moving back into the Severn River.

According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, the EF-0 tornado touched down at 2:46 p.m. July 31, packing estimated peak winds of 65 mph along a short, 0.1-mile path near the Severn Sailing Association. The event lasted just moments but left minor damage to vessels docked in the marina.

No injuries or fatalities were reported. The tornado’s narrow 25-yard width limited impacts mainly to the waterfront, though boaters and marina staff were startled by the sudden onset of severe weather. Eastport, just across Spa Creek from downtown Annapolis, saw the twister make landfall before returning over water as a waterspout.

Residents and visitors should remain weather-aware during summer afternoons, as waterspouts and brief tornadoes can form quickly near Chesapeake Bay. The NWS urges mariners to seek shelter on shore if threatening clouds or rotating columns of water are spotted.

Additional weather advisories are possible as storms continue along the Maryland coastline. Stay tuned to local updates for changing conditions.
