Cleveland, Ohio – Strong rip currents are threatening beachgoers along Lake Erie today, prompting officials to issue a Beach Hazards Statement through 6 p.m. Friday for much of Northeast Ohio.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, the advisory affects Erie, Lorain, Cuyahoga, and Lake counties, where wind and wave action are creating dangerous swimming conditions. The statement was issued at 4 a.m. and urges residents and visitors to stay out of the water for their safety.
Winds of 10–15 mph and incoming wave activity are generating currents that can sweep swimmers away from shore, especially near sand bars and piers. The National Weather Service warns that even strong swimmers may be at risk. No other hazardous weather is expected through the weekend.
Officials urge residents to avoid entering the lake today, especially in unguarded areas. “Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions,” the statement reads. No lifeguard presence is guaranteed in many of the impacted areas.
Conditions are expected to improve by this evening, with calm, sunny weather continuing into next week. No further weather alerts are currently expected, though updates will be posted if conditions change.
