Jackson, Mississippi – Drivers and residents in northwest Mississippi, including Greenville and Greenwood, should prepare for possible severe storms from 2 p.m. through 10 p.m. Thursday, with damaging wind gusts and quarter-size hail expected in the most intense cells.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a marginal risk (Level 1) for isolated severe storms extends across the region, with the greatest threat focused along and west of I-55, including cities such as Bastrop, Hamburg, and parts of Yazoo County. Forecasters warn that the strongest storms could bring wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to one inch in diameter.

Local emergency managers advise residents to secure outdoor objects, avoid unnecessary travel during the storm window, and stay alert for rapidly changing weather. Power outages and downed tree limbs are possible, particularly along rural highways near Greenville and Greenwood. Motorists on U.S. 82, Highway 61, and county roads should watch for sudden downpours and debris.

This round of severe weather is the first notable event of late July, reminiscent of similar summer storms seen in 2021. With school activities resuming in some districts, parents are urged to monitor updates and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

Threats remain until 10 p.m. Thursday, and further advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
