New York, NY – A brutal heat wave is gripping the Tri-State area today, with dangerous heat indices between 95°F and 105°F and a rising flash flood threat heading into Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for northeast New Jersey through 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a broader Heat Advisory blanketing New York City, Long Island, and the Lower Hudson Valley. Scorching conditions combined with high humidity may lead to heat exhaustion or stroke—especially for older adults, outdoor workers, and those without access to cooling.

The bigger threat arrives late Thursday as a stalled front triggers rounds of thunderstorms capable of producing torrential rain and localized flash flooding through midday Friday. Areas north and west of NYC could see the worst, including Rockland, Westchester, and parts of Passaic County, with wind gusts topping 50 mph and hail up to an inch in diameter possible.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and secure backup power sources ahead of potential storm-related outages. Avoid low-lying areas and never drive through flooded roadways.

More updates are expected by 6 p.m. Wednesday, with additional warnings likely.
