Champaign, Illinois – Dangerous heat and strong storms are on track to collide Thursday afternoon across central Illinois, with flash flooding and travel hazards expected by evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, heat index values will climb above 100°F Thursday, July 31st, south of I-72, including areas near Champaign, Decatur, and Mattoon. A slow-moving cold front will then push into the region, triggering repeated thunderstorms — some capable of damaging wind and torrential downpours.
Drivers should avoid low-lying roads, especially where recent rains have saturated soil. Urban flooding could occur rapidly, particularly in cities like Urbana, Charleston, and Danville. Afternoon and evening travel on I-72 and US-136 could become dangerous due to flash flooding and low visibility.
A Dense Fog Advisory early Wednesday added to midweek travel trouble, with near-zero visibility reported along the Lincoln-to-Paris corridor. That fog is expected to lift by mid-morning, but spotty patches may linger in valleys or rural areas.
While severe weather isn’t expected Thursday night, showers could linger into early Friday. Outdoor plans should be rescheduled or closely monitored, especially events planned in parks or flood-prone zones.
