Albuquerque, N.M. – Flash flooding could hit the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Northeast Highlands as powerful storms develop Wednesday afternoon, raising urgent concerns for burn scar areas near Ruidoso and Hermits Peak.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Flood Watch is in effect from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Forecasters warn that showers and thunderstorms will build across the mountains early in the afternoon and drift northward, with some storms producing up to 3 inches of rain per hour. Flooding and debris flows are possible in areas scarred by recent wildfires, including the Calf Canyon and Hermits Peak zones.

Communities in Ruidoso, Las Vegas, Eagle Nest, and Mora should expect the heaviest impacts. Fast-rising waters could cut off roads such as U.S. 64 and NM 48, while creeks and streams may swell quickly. Residents are urged to stay away from arroyos, avoid driving on flooded roadways, and have evacuation routes ready in case Flash Flood Warnings are issued.

Local emergency managers urge families to charge cell phones, gather important documents, and remain alert for changing weather conditions. This round of severe storms follows a wet July and could cause flooding similar to last year’s post-fire events.

The Flood Watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday. Additional advisories may be posted if heavy rain lingers or storm cells redevelop into the evening.
