Charleston, S.C. – Dangerously high heat is gripping the Lowcountry this Tuesday, with heat indices climbing as high as 112 degrees in parts of coastal South Carolina and southeast Georgia.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. for counties including Charleston, Beaufort, and Colleton in South Carolina, and Chatham and Effingham in Georgia. Actual air temperatures are rising into the upper 90s, but extreme humidity is pushing the heat index past triple digits.
Charleston, Walterboro, and Savannah are among the cities expecting “feels like” temperatures between 106° and 112°. These conditions pose a serious risk of heat-related illness, especially for those working or spending time outdoors. Residents are urged to limit strenuous activity, stay hydrated, and avoid peak afternoon hours.
Cooling centers are open in some counties, and utilities are advising customers to reduce power usage during peak hours. This level of heat is common in late July but still poses annual challenges for vulnerable populations and infrastructure.
The Heat Advisory is expected to expire tonight, but NWS warns more alerts could follow if high pressure lingers. Stay updated with local emergency alerts and check on neighbors.
