Kansas City, Missouri – Dangerously high temperatures are pushing heat index values near 115°F across northwest Missouri, with an Extreme Heat Warning in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, the advisory covers Andrew, Atchison, Nodaway, Worth, Holt, and Gentry counties, where residents are being urged to avoid outdoor activity and check on vulnerable populations. The warning, issued early Monday, marks one of the most intense heat waves of the summer.
Cities including Maryville, Savannah, Albany, and Tarkio will experience oppressive conditions, especially during the afternoon hours when heat and humidity combine to elevate the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Rural areas and towns like Craig, Forest City, and Stanberry are also at elevated risk due to limited access to cooling centers.
Residents should limit time outside, wear lightweight clothing, and drink water regularly—even if not thirsty. Those without air conditioning are encouraged to seek public cooling shelters or stay with friends or family.
The heat is expected to ease slightly after Tuesday evening, but the NWS warns that additional heat advisories may follow later in the week.
