Memphis, Tenn. – A dangerous heat wave is blanketing the Mid-South, with life-threatening temperatures set to peak Monday afternoon and stretch through Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until noon today, followed by an Extreme Heat Warning from noon Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. A Heat Watch will then take over through late Wednesday night. Heat index values will spike to 112° today and may climb as high as 115° by midweek.
The warning impacts a wide swath of East Arkansas, North Mississippi, Southeast Missouri, and West Tennessee, including Memphis, Jackson, Jonesboro, and Clarksdale. Residents should stay indoors, hydrate frequently, and avoid outdoor activity between noon and 7 p.m., when heat stress is most dangerous.
Vulnerable populations—including seniors, outdoor workers, and those without air conditioning—are at highest risk. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, heavy sweating, and nausea, while heat stroke is a medical emergency.
Cooling centers are available in Shelby County and nearby cities. Check on elderly neighbors and pets, and limit travel during peak heat hours.
Further advisories could be issued as temperatures remain elevated. Extreme heat alerts remain in place through Wednesday night.
