Chicago, Illinois – Torrential rainfall triggered a Flash Flood Warning across east central Cook and southeastern DuPage counties Friday, with parts of Chicago already seeing roads submerged and low-lying areas filling fast.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, up to 2 inches of rain had already fallen by 11:43 a.m., with storms continuing to dump additional rainfall over the city’s South and West Sides. The warning remains in effect until 2:45 p.m. Friday. Officials warn that flash flooding is either underway or imminent in several neighborhoods including Bridgeport, Englewood, and South Shore.
Streets and viaducts in Burbank, Brookfield, La Grange, and Chicago Lawn are especially vulnerable to rapid-onset flooding. Midway Airport travelers may face delays, and drivers are urged to avoid underpasses and poorly drained roads.
“Turn around, don’t drown” remains critical advice, particularly in places like Ashburn, Auburn Gresham, and Woodridge where water can rise quickly. Commuters should reroute or delay travel if possible and monitor local alerts.
This warning may be extended if rainfall persists. Stay tuned for updates from NWS Chicago and local emergency management.
