Sacramento, California – Thunderstorms are set to rumble across the Sierra Nevada and northern California mountains through Saturday night, bringing lightning, gusty winds, and the risk of new fire starts, especially around Reno, Susanville, and the Tahoe region.

According to the National Weather Service Sacramento, thunderstorm probabilities climb each day—rising from 17% in Reno Wednesday to a 40% risk by Saturday night. Susanville faces a 43% chance on Friday, with Hawthorne and Bishop also at elevated risk through the weekend. Sacramento and the Bay Area remain mostly dry, with less than a 2% chance.

The most severe weather is expected along the I-80 corridor and near major passes including Donner and Echo Summit, where isolated storms could cause brief downpours, small hail, and sudden road slickness. The US Forest Service warns that lightning strikes could spark new wildfires, especially where grass and brush remain dry after recent heatwaves.

Travelers should avoid mountain roads during afternoon and evening hours, secure loose outdoor items, and have alternate power sources on hand. If thunder roars, seek shelter indoors and stay off ridgelines.

Thunderstorm chances peak Friday and Saturday before slowly tapering off Sunday. Additional watches and warnings may be issued as new storms develop.
