Eagle River, Wis. – Unhealthy air is moving into Vilas County and northwest Wisconsin Thursday as wildfire smoke from Canada sweeps south, prompting urgent warnings for sensitive groups to stay indoors. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says the air quality index (AQI) will reach “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” to “Unhealthy” levels starting at 6 a.m. Thursday and continuing through Thursday night.

According to the Wisconsin DNR, the heaviest smoke will reach the Duluth/Superior area between 6 and 9 a.m. Thursday, spreading southeast across Eagle River, Lac du Flambeau, and nearby communities by midday. The smoke will likely impact an Eau Claire-to-Rhinelander line by midnight. PM2.5 particle pollution in the air can aggravate asthma, heart disease, and cause symptoms such as shortness of breath and unusual fatigue. Residents with respiratory or heart conditions are urged to keep quick-relief medications nearby and move all activities inside.

Everyone is advised to limit outdoor activity, especially children, older adults, and those with chronic health issues. Keep windows closed, use air purifiers if available, and monitor symptoms closely. Outdoor events, sports, and gatherings should be rescheduled or moved indoors for safety.

This smoke event could extend into Friday and possibly the weekend, as DNR officials warn additional advisories may be needed if winds shift. The next air quality update is expected Thursday afternoon.
