Naperville, IL – Drivers across Illinois are being urged to slow down today as local police departments, including Naperville Police, step up patrols in recognition of Illinois Speed Awareness Day. Motorists can expect increased law enforcement presence focused on speeding and other traffic violations throughout the day.

According to the Naperville Police Department, the campaign is a partnership with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and more than 300 state, county, and local law enforcement agencies. Officials say the initiative is designed to highlight the dangers of speeding and to remind drivers that obeying posted speed limits can help save lives.

“Speeding is a choice that puts everyone at risk,” Naperville Police Sgt. Eric Muska stated in a release. “It reduces the driver’s ability to steer safely around other vehicles, increases stopping distance, and can lead to more severe injuries if you are involved in a crash. We urge drivers to slow down and make the safe choice.”

Authorities report that Illinois sees thousands of speed-related crashes each year, many resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Enforcement efforts today include extra patrols, speed detection equipment, and public education efforts, aiming to reduce preventable collisions.

Law enforcement officials say they hope the increased visibility will encourage safe driving habits not just today, but every day. Residents are encouraged to share the message with friends and family to help keep Illinois roadways safer for everyone.
