Champaign, Illinois – Residents across central and east-central Illinois should brace for oppressive heat Thursday, July 24, with a heat index peaking at 110°F. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in effect from 10 a.m. through 7 p.m., warning that dangerously high temperatures and humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those without access to cooling.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, heat index values will remain over 105°F across Champaign, Piatt, McLean, and surrounding counties through Thursday evening. Conditions are especially risky along the I-55 corridor, where traffic delays are possible due to heat-related vehicle issues or emergency responses.

Temperatures will climb to 96°F in Champaign on Thursday, with little relief overnight. Southwesterly winds and full sunshine will intensify the heat. Thunderstorm chances rise late Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing temporary relief but also the risk of heavy rain and lightning through Saturday. No severe weather is expected at this time, though downpours could disrupt outdoor plans.

Health officials urge limiting outdoor activity, drinking plenty of water, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Those without air conditioning can call 211 or visit 211illinois.org to find cooling centers.
