Indianapolis, Indiana – Relentless heat and humidity are gripping Indiana this week, with dangerously high heat index values pushing past 105°F in cities across the state. The most intense heat will hit western Indiana first, triggering a heat advisory for Wednesday afternoon before expanding to the rest of Indiana by Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, every major city from Bloomington to Terre Haute will experience maximum heat indices of 104°F to 107°F through at least Tuesday, July 29. Residents in Indianapolis, Kokomo, and Lafayette should prepare for hazardous conditions, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours when temperatures peak. The greatest risk arrives Thursday, with widespread areas expected to exceed a heat index of 105°F.

Officials urge everyone to avoid non-essential outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors—especially the elderly and those without air conditioning. Local agencies recommend seeking cool indoor spaces, charging mobile devices, and avoiding travel during peak heat. Central Indiana school districts are monitoring the situation, with outdoor activities likely to be postponed.

Relief may come with increased rain chances late Friday into the weekend, but the heat danger remains high statewide until then. Further advisories are possible as the situation develops.
