Cheyenne, Wyoming – Outdoor burning is off the table in parts of Carbon County today as critical fire weather conditions take hold, with gusty winds and low humidity setting the stage for rapid wildfire spread.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, covering areas like Rawlins, Baggs, and Jeffrey City. Relative humidity is expected to plummet to 13–15%, while wind gusts could reach up to 30 mph, creating ideal conditions for fire ignition and rapid growth.
Communities including Seminoe Dam, Muddy Gap, and Hanna are urged to avoid any outdoor burning or activity that could spark flames. These dry, windy conditions increase the risk of wildfires jumping roadways or spreading through grasslands and brush areas. Local fire crews remain on high alert, especially near State Route 789 and Interstate 80.
Residents should secure loose materials, postpone fire-related tasks, and be prepared to report any signs of smoke immediately. Even a small spark could ignite fast-moving fires under these conditions.
The Red Flag Warning remains active until 8 p.m. Tuesday, with elevated fire risk potentially returning later this week.
