St. Augustine, Florida – Boaters along northeast Florida’s coastline between St. Augustine and Flagler Beach are urged to head for shore as a powerful thunderstorm moves slowly southeastward offshore Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, Doppler radar confirmed the storm at 7:50 a.m. near Marineland, roughly eight nautical miles north of Palm Coast. The storm packs gusty winds of up to 30 knots, dangerous lightning, and increased wave action. Mariners in coastal waters extending up to 20 nautical miles offshore, especially near Marineland, Flagler Beach, and northern Palm Coast, face the greatest immediate risks.

Conditions offshore will become hazardous quickly, causing reduced visibility and turbulent seas. Mariners should immediately head toward the nearest safe harbor or port to wait out the threat.

These slow-moving, intense summer storms often generate dangerous marine conditions capable of sudden wind gusts and lightning, posing risks for smaller craft. Mariners must ensure all electronics and communication devices are charged and functional.

The thunderstorm threat should ease later Tuesday morning, but boaters should stay alert for additional advisories from the National Weather Service. Updated marine weather alerts could follow as storms redevelop later in the day.
