Hastings, Nebraska – Overnight thunderstorms dropped up to three inches of rain across Furnas County, putting drivers and residents in Edison and nearby communities on alert as flooding threatens roads and low-lying areas through 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a flood advisory remains in effect for south central Nebraska, specifically Furnas County, after Doppler radar detected significant rainfall early Tuesday. Officials warn that minor flooding is ongoing or expected soon, especially in areas with poor drainage.
Residents along Highway 6, County Road 403, and within the Edison area are most likely to see water ponding on roads and in fields this morning. Emergency managers urge all drivers to avoid flooded roads and use alternate routes when possible. Most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles, and even shallow water can pose serious hazards.
People in affected areas should monitor local alerts, keep mobile devices charged, and move valuables off basement floors. This event follows a wetter-than-average July for south central Nebraska, with local streams and creeks running high.
Rain should taper by late morning, but more advisories are possible if heavy rain returns. Warnings remain in effect until at least 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
