Cheyenne, Wyoming – Wildfire risk is rising fast across Wyoming today, with a Red Flag Warning in effect for much of the state—including Cheyenne, Casper, Rock Springs, and surrounding counties—until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Residents are urged to avoid all outdoor burning and use extreme caution, as warm temperatures, gusty winds, and low humidity are creating conditions ripe for fast-moving fires.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Cheyenne and Riverton, winds from the southwest will reach 10 to 20 mph, gusting up to 30 mph across Carbon, Sweetwater, Fremont, Natrona, and Uinta counties. Relative humidity will drop as low as 12 percent, with highs in the upper 80s and low 90s—fueling any new or ongoing wildfires, especially in open grasslands and forested regions.
Critical fire weather is expected to impact fire zones 280, 283, 288, 289, 277, 278, 279, 422, and 423. Key highways such as I-80 and I-25 may see reduced visibility due to smoke, while rural roads near Ferris Mountains and the Wind River Basin are at risk for sudden fire spread. Local agencies are advising ranchers and outdoor workers to remain alert, keep communication devices charged, and have evacuation plans ready. Residents in Casper, Rock Springs, and Cheyenne should keep vehicles fueled and be prepared for potential power disruptions or closures.
Outdoor burning—including campfires and debris burning—is not recommended under these conditions. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly, with erratic behavior possible.
Red Flag Warnings remain in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday, and additional advisories may be issued as dry, windy weather continues. Stay tuned to the National Weather Service and local emergency officials for updates.
