Huntsville, Alabama – Drivers across Jackson County, Alabama, and Franklin County, Tennessee are facing hazardous travel conditions early Tuesday as dense fog reduces visibility to near zero in spots along lakes, rivers, and rural routes.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect for both counties until 8 a.m. CDT. Areas of thick fog have already developed, especially near waterways and low-lying stretches. Officials urge commuters to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra travel time, especially on bridges and in valleys.

Specific trouble spots include U.S. Highway 72 near Scottsboro, Alabama, and stretches of U.S. Route 64 in Franklin County, Tennessee, where fog can quickly obscure roadways and intersections. The Alabama Department of Transportation and Tennessee Highway Patrol advise keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and avoiding sudden lane changes. Morning school bus routes may also experience delays or changes.

For those heading out early, driving tips include staying alert for unexpected changes in visibility, using fog lights if available, and avoiding distractions. Similar fog events have led to multi-vehicle accidents in this region in recent years, underscoring the need for caution.

This advisory is expected to expire at 8 a.m., but forecasters warn that additional alerts may be issued if dense fog persists or redevelops later in the week.
