La Crosse, Wisconsin – Heat and humidity are set to deliver dangerous conditions across southern and central Wisconsin Wednesday, with heat indices surging near 105°F along and south of Interstate 94. Residents from La Crosse to Eau Claire are urged to take frequent breaks from the heat, stay hydrated, and avoid outdoor activities during the peak afternoon hours.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, temperatures and humidity will combine for a hazardous heat index in the 90s to low 100s Tuesday, with even higher readings expected Wednesday. The risk peaks Wednesday afternoon and early evening as scattered severe thunderstorms threaten the region from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The primary hazards are damaging wind gusts, large hail, and the possibility of an isolated tornado.

Communities including Tomah, Black River Falls, and Winona, MN, may experience brief power outages, downed trees, and hazardous driving as storms move eastward. The highest risk zone stretches from southeast Minnesota into western and central Wisconsin. If you must be outdoors, limit strenuous activity and take advantage of shade or air conditioning when possible.

Prepare now by charging devices, securing loose outdoor items, and reviewing severe weather safety plans. Stay tuned to local alerts, as additional warnings may be issued if storms intensify.
Severe heat and storm warnings remain in effect through Wednesday night.
