Birmingham, Alabama – Central Alabama residents are bracing for another sweltering day as a Heat Advisory blankets the region until at least 9 p.m. tonight. Afternoon highs are expected to soar between 91 and 97 degrees, with the heat index pushing a dangerous 108°, posing serious health risks, especially for those outdoors or without adequate cooling.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the advisory covers major cities including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Auburn. Residents are urged to limit strenuous activity, stay hydrated, and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Officials warn that air conditioning may be insufficient for some, and extra caution is advised for vulnerable populations such as seniors and children.
Local hospitals and emergency services are on alert as utility providers prepare for increased demand. Road crews in Jefferson, Montgomery, and surrounding counties will scale back outdoor operations during peak heat hours. Previous heatwaves this summer have already strained power grids and prompted rolling outages in some neighborhoods.
Residents should check on neighbors and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles. The heat advisory could be extended into Wednesday, with additional alerts possible if dangerous conditions persist.
Stay tuned to local news and @NWSBirmingham for further updates as this excessive heat wave continues.
