Kansas – A brutal heatwave continues to scorch parts of western Kansas, with a heat advisory in effect through Monday evening. The heat index is expected to soar between 105°F and 109°F, posing a significant risk for heat-related illnesses. The advisory remains in place until 7 PM CDT Sunday for many counties, including Ellis, Pawnee, and Stafford, with a second heat advisory extending from 1 PM to 7 PM CDT on Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, the high heat combined with high humidity levels can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, especially for those working outdoors or without access to air conditioning. The affected areas include Ellis, Rush, Barber, Comanche, Edwards, Kiowa, Pawnee, Pratt, Stafford, and Clark counties, as well as Trego County, which has been added to the advisory starting at 1 PM Monday.

Residents in these areas are urged to take precautions, including drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding outdoor activities, and checking on elderly neighbors. The high temperatures are expected to persist into Monday, so it’s vital to remain vigilant.

With no immediate relief in sight, residents should stay updated for possible extensions of the advisory or additional alerts. For those without air conditioning, local cooling centers are an important option.
