CHICAGO – The Obama Presidential Center will break ground in 2021.
The news came in a post from former President Barack Obama via social media this afternoon.
“Today, after a comprehensive federal regulatory review process, I’m proud to announce the Obama Presidential Center will break ground in 2021. Michelle and I couldn’t be more excited to bring this new center of energy, connection, and growth to the South Side of Chicago.” said President Obama in a video message.
The groundbreaking had hit delays repeatedly, including a federal lawsuit filed in May 2018 by Protect Our Parks against the Chicago Park District, arguing the park could not transfer public park land to the Obama Foundation.
Nearly 20 acres is planned to host the Obama Presidential Center which will serve as a hub for the Obama Foundation. Featuring gardens, playgrounds, walking trails and bike paths, inside and around Jackson Park.
An economic impact study projects the Center will inject over 3.1 billion dollars into Cook County, attracting over 700,000 visitors worldwide annually.
No groundbreaking date was announced today, but it is expected to take four years to complete the project.
