La Crosse, Wis. – A dangerous line of strong to severe thunderstorms is pushing southeast across northeast Iowa early Friday, with wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail reaching one inch in diameter threatening overnight safety.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, these storms will move through areas from Mason City and Albert Lea toward Decorah, Waterloo, and the broader Upper Midwest until at least 4:30 a.m. Forecasters warn that heavy rainfall could cause street flooding, particularly in urban areas and low-lying spots.

Cities in the storm’s path—including Rochester, La Crosse, and Mason City—should prepare for rapid changes in weather. Power outages, tree damage, and flooded roads are possible as storms intensify. Local DOTs may respond to downed limbs and blocked routes if wind and hail increase overnight. Campers and boaters along the Mississippi River and area lakes should seek sturdy shelter immediately.

Residents are urged to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary, charge devices, and monitor local alerts. This is the same corridor that saw severe weather in July 2021, leading to widespread power outages and flooding.

Storm threats will persist through early Friday, with additional watches possible as the system advances southeast. Stay tuned for further advisories from the National Weather Service.
