Lubbock, Texas – A summer heatwave is taking hold across West Texas this weekend, with highs surging into the upper 90s and low 100s from Lubbock to Childress and beyond.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, the hottest temperatures today will reach 101° in Childress and 99° in Aspermont, with Lubbock itself hitting 98° by mid-afternoon. Plainview, Friona, and Brownfield are all forecast to stay in the mid-to-upper 90s, and overnight lows will remain unseasonably warm, mostly in the 70s.
The persistent sunshine is driving up pavement and air temperatures, making outdoor work and travel riskier, especially on exposed highways such as US-84 and US-62. Area schools, city parks, and construction sites should limit activities between noon and 6 p.m., and residents are urged to hydrate, avoid strenuous tasks during peak heat, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
While July heat isn’t unusual for the South Plains, this surge is among the hottest stretches so far this summer. More 100-degree days are possible into Sunday as the warming trend continues.
Stay tuned for further updates—additional heat advisories may be issued if temperatures climb higher.
