Chicago, Illinois – Scorching heat and dangerous humidity are gripping Illinois today, with peak heat indices climbing to 101° and the threat of strong to severe thunderstorms looming across the state by late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, high temperatures will reach the upper 80s to low 90s, creating sweltering conditions that could fuel scattered severe storms this evening, especially in northern Illinois. Damaging winds, heavy rain, and lightning are possible, with localized flooding concerns in low-lying urban areas.

Storms may begin after 3 p.m., potentially disrupting rush hour in metro Chicago, Rockford, and Joliet. Residents along Lake Michigan should also watch for rip currents Thursday, particularly south of I-80, where swimming could become hazardous. Thursday brings cooler air, with highs in the low 80s and a noticeable drop in humidity.

While Friday offers a brief break from the stormy pattern, rain and thunderstorm chances return Saturday and Sunday, along with rising humidity and temperatures around 85°, particularly away from the lakefront.

Storm warnings and heat advisories remain in effect until late tonight. Stay off roads during downpours, secure outdoor items, and avoid swimming in flagged areas through Thursday.
