Huntsville, Alabama – A brutal combination of dangerous heat and scattered thunderstorms is gripping north Alabama this week, with heat index values soaring past 100° and a daily chance of afternoon storms through Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for north-central and northwest Alabama from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, where heat index values could reach as high as 108°F. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible each afternoon, increasing to a 60% chance by Friday and Saturday.

Huntsville, Florence, and Decatur will experience highs in the 90s through the weekend, with humid conditions making it feel significantly hotter. Thunderstorm activity could cause localized flooding and brief gusty winds, particularly on Friday and Saturday when storm coverage increases.

Officials urge residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Drivers are reminded: never leave children or pets in vehicles, even for a few minutes. Symptoms of heat illness can escalate quickly in this level of heat.

The combination of oppressive humidity and pop-up storms will continue through Sunday, with little relief in sight. More advisories could be issued later this week as temperatures and dewpoints remain high.
