Marquette, Mich. – Cooler temperatures and unstable weather are sweeping across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula today, with life-threatening rip currents prompting a Beach Hazards Statement along Lake Superior and isolated thunderstorms developing inland.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, strong northeast winds are fueling dangerous waves and currents along beaches in Marquette and Alger counties, including McCarty’s Cove, Little Presque Isle, and Pictured Rocks. Conditions are especially hazardous near piers, breakwalls, and exposed points like Grand Marais Harbor. The alert remains in effect through this evening.
Inland, showers and a few thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, with highs ranging from the upper 50s west to lower 70s east. Gusty winds up to 20 mph could accompany stronger storms near Menominee by late afternoon, bringing brief downpours and lightning.
Residents and visitors are urged to stay out of the water and avoid shoreline structures. Those near Menominee should monitor radar and be ready to take shelter as storms approach. This unsettled pattern follows a stretch of warmer July weather, marking a notable cooldown.
Additional weather updates and alerts may be issued if storms intensify or rip current risks extend into Thursday.
