Duluth, Minnesota – Strong northeast winds are whipping across western Lake Superior today, making conditions hazardous for small boats and swimmers near the Twin Ports. Gusts up to 25 knots are expected, creating waves of 2 to 5 feet and prompting a Small Craft Advisory in effect through 7 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, dangerous rip currents are also likely along area beaches, particularly in and around Duluth, Superior, and Two Harbors. Boaters and swimmers are urged to stay out of the water and avoid exposed breakwalls. The most intense winds are forecast between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., with gusts ranging from 23 to 28 knots along key bays and islands.
On land, cooler, cloudy conditions are expected across northeastern Minnesota, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing through Wednesday night. Rainfall totals will remain light, generally under 0.25 inches, but areas like Grand Rapids and Hibbing may see slightly higher amounts.
Sunshine returns Thursday with highs in the low 70s before another round of showers and storms moves in Friday into early Saturday. The National Weather Service warns more updates are likely if wind conditions persist into Thursday.
