Amarillo, Texas – Short bursts of thunderstorms are peppering the Texas Panhandle Monday afternoon, threatening Amarillo, Dumas, and nearby communities with gusty winds over 50 mph and frequent lightning through 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, these isolated to scattered storms will be brief—lasting just 30 to 60 minutes each—but may pack a punch as they form along old storm outflows. The main risks include sudden strong wind gusts and dangerous lightning, while most storms will remain nearly stationary, increasing the potential for localized hazards.

Motorists along I-40 from Vega through Amarillo and east toward Pampa should stay alert for sudden downpours and strong winds, especially where visibility may quickly drop. Residents in Dalhart, Hereford, and Canadian could also see similar impacts into the evening. The short duration of each storm means conditions can change rapidly with little warning.

To stay safe, limit travel during severe weather, secure outdoor items that could become projectiles, and remain indoors when thunder roars. This pattern of scattered, intense storms may persist into tonight as additional cells redevelop.

Storm warnings and advisories will remain in effect until at least 9 p.m., with more updates possible if conditions intensify.
