Plattsburgh, N.Y. – Unhealthy air will blanket much of Northern New York from 10 a.m. Tuesday until midnight, posing a heightened risk for residents across Clinton, Essex, Franklin, and St. Lawrence counties.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Air Quality Index (AQI) for fine particulates is expected to exceed 151—meaning outdoor air will reach levels considered unhealthy for everyone. Residents from Plattsburgh to Massena and Malone, including Lake Placid, Tupper Lake, Ogdensburg, and Potsdam, are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activity, especially vulnerable groups like children, seniors, and those with heart or lung conditions.
The advisory covers both urban and rural communities, with elevated particulate pollution due to stagnant summer weather. Health officials urge residents to keep windows closed, use air purifiers if available, and avoid exercising or working outside during the day. Schools, daycares, and care facilities should monitor outdoor time for sensitive groups. Emergency rooms may see an uptick in respiratory complaints similar to smoke events seen in summer 2023.
